Every summer, I get the same question, and I completely understand the worry behind it. You look out at a lawn that was thick and green in spring, and now it is straw-coloured, crispy underfoot, and looking, frankly, dead. It is a horrible sight when you have put work into it. So let me reassure you straight away. In almost every case, a brown lawn in a British summer is not dead at all. It is dormant. That is a very different thing, and it is your lawn doing exactly what it evolved to do. In this post I will explain what the browning actually is, whether your lawn will recover, and what you can do to help it through a dry spell.
What a brown lawn is actually telling you.
Grass is remarkably good at surviving dry weather. When the weather turns hot and water becomes scarce, grass makes a sensible decision. It stops spending energy on green leaf up top, and instead protects the crown and roots at the base, which are the living part of the plant. The green blades turn brown and go dormant, but the plant itself is very much alive. What you are looking at is the leaf shutting down, not the lawn dying.
This is why a dormant lawn feels crisp and looks lifeless, and yet recovers so readily. The straw colour is a protective response, not a death sentence.
If you want to check whether your lawn is dormant or genuinely dead, there is a simple test. Take hold of a small tuft and give it a gentle tug. Dormant grass stays firmly anchored, because the roots are alive and holding on. Dead grass pulls away easily. You can also part the grass and look right down at the base, near the soil. If you can see any green there, or firm, pale crowns at the bottom, the plant is alive and waiting. In my experience across a great many British lawns, the vast majority that owners fear are dead are simply dormant.
Will it recover?
Yes. In almost all cases, a dormant lawn greens up again on its own once cooler temperatures and proper rain return, often within a couple of weeks of a good soaking. You do not need to do anything dramatic. The lawn is built for this.
What does make a difference is the health of the lawn underneath. A lawn with deep roots and a dense, well-fed sward has more in reserve to draw on, and it recovers faster and more evenly. A weak, shallow-rooted lawn that has been starved of nutrients takes longer, and can come back patchy, because the drought exposes the areas that were already struggling. This is the honest reason that consistent feeding and good mowing through the year matter so much. They are not about forcing a lawn to stay green in a heatwave. They are about building a lawn that is strong enough to come through one, and quick to recover afterwards.
One note on expectations. Recovery is gradual. Your lawn will not turn from straw to green overnight. It greens up over a week or two as growth resumes, and that is completely normal.
Why is some of my lawn browner than the rest?
This is one of the questions I am asked most often, and it is a good one. A lawn very rarely goes brown evenly. Far more often, some patches turn straw-coloured while other areas stay green, and it can look quite random. There is usually a clear reason, and more often than not that reason is compaction.
Compaction is simply the soil being squeezed tight, with the air spaces pressed out of it. It builds up wherever a lawn takes the most pressure and wear, the routes everyone walks, the spots where children and pets play, where the mower turns at the end of each pass, and around gates and seating areas. Because that wear is uneven across the lawn, the compaction is uneven too, and so is the browning.
Here is why the compacted areas suffer first. When soil is compacted, water cannot soak into it easily. Much of it runs off the surface or sits on top and evaporates, instead of sinking down to the roots. And because roots cannot push down through dense soil, they stay shallow, which leaves them far less moisture to draw on. So the compacted patches take up less water, hold less water, and dry out soonest. The greener areas, where the soil is looser and the roots are deeper, have more moisture in reserve and stay green for longer.
The useful part is that this uneven browning is telling you something. It is showing you exactly where your lawn is compacted and where moisture is not getting through. There is not much you can do about it in the middle of a dry spell, and you should not aerate a dry, dormant lawn. But come the autumn, aerating those areas relieves the compaction, lets water and air reach the roots properly, and helps your lawn take up moisture far more evenly the following summer.
Other things can play a part too. Areas in full sun dry faster than shaded ones, and any spot where the soil is thin over old rubble or hardcore, often near paths, patios, or the house, dries out much more quickly because there is so little soil to hold moisture. But compaction is the most common cause of a patchy, uneven brown lawn, and the one most worth putting right.
How to help your lawn through a dry spell.
You cannot control the weather, but a few simple habits genuinely help your lawn cope, and a few common mistakes make things worse.
A few things that help:
- Raise your mowing height. Through summer I keep the lawn a little longer, around 4 to 5cm. Longer grass shades the soil, keeps the roots cooler, and slows the rate at which moisture is lost.
- Mow less often, and only when the grass is actually growing. In a dry spell growth slows right down, so you will not need to cut nearly as often. When you do, keep your blade sharp, because a clean cut stresses the grass far less than a blunt one that tears it.
- Never remove more than a third of the height in one go. Scalping a stressed lawn is one of the quickest ways to damage it.
- Stay off it as much as you can. Walking repeatedly over a parched, dormant lawn can bruise and break the brittle grass, leaving worn patches.
A few things to avoid:
- Do not scarify or aerate a dry, dormant lawn. These are renovation jobs that leave the lawn needing to recover, so they belong in autumn, not the middle of a drought.
- Do not reach for a cheap, quick-release feed in the hope of forcing it green. A sudden hit of fast-release nitrogen on a heat-stressed lawn can scorch it and add to the stress, exactly when the lawn can least afford it.
- Do not panic and water it heavily every evening. As I will explain next, light daily watering does more harm than good.
Should you water in a drought?
This is one of the most common questions I am asked in summer, and the answer depends on your situation.
If you choose to water, the golden rule is to water deeply and infrequently. A good, thorough soak once or twice a week, early in the morning or in the evening, encourages the roots to grow down deep in search of moisture, which is exactly what you want. Light sprinkling every day does the opposite. It keeps the roots shallow, near the surface, and most of the water is lost to evaporation before it does any good.
For a smaller lawn, that is manageable. For a larger lawn, it often is not. You cannot realistically give a big lawn a deep soak by hand, so many owners of larger lawns rely entirely on the rain, and that is perfectly fine. And in a prolonged dry summer, some parts of the country may see hosepipe restrictions, which can take watering off the table altogether, even for a small lawn.
Here is the reassuring part. If you cannot water, your lawn will still recover. Watering in a drought is about keeping a lawn green through the dry spell if you want to. It is not about survival. A dormant lawn that is left completely unwatered will green up again when the rain comes, just the same.
Feeding your lawn safely in the summer heat.
There is a worry I hear a lot, and it is a fair one. People assume you cannot feed a lawn in the height of summer, because feed left on a hot, dry lawn will scorch it. With an ordinary feed off the garden centre shelf, that is a real risk, and it is sensible to be cautious.

So if your lawn has gone brown this summer, try not to worry. In almost every case it is dormant, not dead, and it is simply doing what grass has always done to survive. Keep it mown a little longer, stay off it where you can, water deeply and occasionally if you are able and there are no restrictions in place, and then be patient. When the cooler weather and the rain come back, your lawn will green up again, and a healthy, well-fed lawn will be among the first to do so.
